Laguna Education Foundation

Programs and Projects

Higher Education Program
In collaboration with Partners for Success and the Pueblo of Laguna, the Laguna Education Foundation oversees the Higher Education program which provides scholarships and support for over 100 scholars, both graduate and undergraduate, per year. Over the past four years, we have distributed over $1.5 Million Dollars in scholarship money and have graduated over 60 students in a wide range of degrees and professional programs. However, we do not believe that money equals success and therefore, we have continued to provide quality support for all our higher education students and those interested in pursuing a college degree. Although we have seen scholarship dollars decline for higher education students in recent years, our program remains the flagship of the Foundation and looks to continue for numerous years. For more information about higher education opportunities, please contact Mike Conant - the Higher Education Director @ 505-552-6377.

College Preparation Program (Hawks on the Horizon/Eagles on the Horizon)
In order to help our high school and middle school students succeed in higher education, the Foundation has implemented our College Preparation program in order to ensure that our young people will have the skills necessary to make good choices in their pursuit of a college degree. We currently work with the Laguna-Acoma High School and the Laguna Middle School, serving 8th, 11th and 12th grades throughout the academic year. The program consists of monthly workshops, afterschool tutoring, ACT/SAT preparation classes, financial aid training, individual college and career counciling, college visits and parental support meetings. We continue to expand this program and hope to include all our students in the coming years. Special thanks to the Daniels Fund and IAIA (Institute of American Indian Arts) for their generous support.

Hawks Plus! (Laguna Youth Corps)
In 2008, the New Mexico Commission For Community Volunteerism provided a grant for a Laguna Summer Pilot Program revolving around Service Learning, Positive Youth Development and Positive Community Development. We look to continue those efforts during the upcoming school year by working with a small group of dedicated young people (ages 14 through 18) to help improve their community and connect service learning with Laguna traditional ways of being and serving. The program will focus on 300 hours of community service, tutoring, project planning and development and issue oriented discussions, as well as, ideas of leadership and sovereignty.

Laguna Summer Youth Program
In collaboration with Partners for Success, the Foundation continues to promote positive youth development and workforce solutions for the Pueblo of Laguna through an eight-week intesnsitve program that imparts youth with job skills and college preparation. In the summer of 2009, 16 youth participated in the program which featured Laguna College students serving as coordinators and instructors for the younger program participants. The idea is to create a cyclical program and encourage more of our youth to serve time "at home" as a way of giving back.

Laguna Digital Media Program
With the help of the Llano Grande Center in South Texas, the Foundation has been developing its Digital Media Program since 2005. The program focuses on training youth and community members to use digital media to tell stories about the community and increase awareness for issues in and around the area. The Digital Media Program has also partnered with the Wellness Coalition of Silver City, on numerous occasions to provide workshops on Digital Storytelling throughout the state. Our ongoing efforts include training and the establishment of a Digital Media Online Site to host the extensive library of stories both audio and video captured over the past several years.
